Computing Resources for Indigenous Communities

Indigenous communities and language advocates who engage in Language Revitalization or Language Documentation activities can benefit from the large number of free or open source software that exists on the internet. Freely available software can be extremely useful, especially for those who sometimes lack the necessary resources to acquire software programs for basic computing and other projects.

Listed below are a number well known software programs that can used for most any computing need. Many can also be used for both PC and Macintosh computers. In addition, supported file formats are interpolable meaning that have the capability to be used across many different software environments.

Office Suites

Office suites are software intended for basic work environments and usually include a word processor, a presentational program, a database program, and a graphics program. Many also include a communications tool for email.

Documentation, Annotation, and Learning

Linguists and educators have developed a wide range of software that allows language data to be organized in a systematic manner for purposes of language documentation, language learning, and linguistic analysis. A common term used for organizing language data in this manner is annotation which simply means for adding notations or descriptions to the data being used. The listing below is not meant to be comprehensive rather it identifies the more commonly known software used by linguists and educators.
